A Regular PFM crown is the conventional version of a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown in which the metal coping is produced using the traditional lost-wax casting technique. After the metal framework is cast, multiple layers of porcelain are manually applied and fired at high temperatures to achieve the final shape and shade.

In this method a wax pattern of tooth crown or bridge is made, surrounding this pattern with an investment material, letting this harden, then melting wax and burning out the wax to produce an intricate and accurate mold was conceived. Today, many modern dental clinics are gradually replacing conventional cast PFM crowns with CAD-CAM and DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) technologies, which produce more accurate, consistent, and better-fitting restorations.
