Metal Free All-Ceramic or All-Porcelain Crown & Bridge

All-ceramic crowns are fabricated entirely out of a glass-like compound such as porcelain. Some types are handmade by a dental technician but some are milled out of a block of ceramic by CAD-CAM machine (Click here to know more about CAD-CAM Technology). Both techniques offer their own advantages.

Advantages of Metal Free All Ceramic Restoration

All-ceramics are commonly placed in those situations where the aesthetics are of utmost concern in front teeth. All-ceramic or all-porcelain dental crowns provide better natural color match than any other crown type. Furthermore, shade matching is much easier with porcelain, so you won’t have to worry about the crown matching the rest of your teeth.

The single biggest advantage of all-ceramics, as compared to PFM, is their more lifelike appearance.

Additionally, the elimination of the metal core allows for light transmission through the porcelain for better optical, life-like properties and a higher level of esthetic. As described in PFM, dark line of metal is never a concern in all-ceramic crown, either initially or if gum recession occurs later on.

In order to make restorations like dental crowns, we need to remove small amounts of tooth structure.

Thanks to technological advances in porcelain manufacturing and adhesion, we can save more tooth structure as compared to PFM restoration.  Even though less cutting is done, it won’t affect its ability to fit snuggly on top of your existing tooth.

Some patients reject the metal used in restorations because they have an allergic reaction. This would cause the gums and sockets to become irritated and even inflamed, so by using metal-free restorations we can avoid this allergic reaction.

Disadvantages of Metal Free All Ceramic Crowns

In comparison, all-ceramic crowns, even those made from the most modern materials, can generally be considered to have relatively inferior physical characteristics like strength, hardness, brittleness and resistance to fracture.

Due to inferior physical characteristics of all ceramic material, it is not advisable for long span bridge in area of heavy masticatory force in back teeth.

The only downside of all ceramic crowns is the cost. The E-Max crown is the newest and most expensive type of crown. E-MAX crowns are the best ones out there, so it is more than worth it to spend extra.

Though certain disadvantage, all-ceramic are a good choice for front teeth crown and bridge, but not in bridge for back teeth.
