It is treatment of choice for those people, who want never to be without teeth. Some patients feel difficulty in chewing food properly due to loss of major number of tooth; though because of some unknown reasons they always try to avoid dental treatment. This unknown reason may be fear of looking toothless face. Immediate denture is right solution for these kind people.

As you know, conventional denture is constructed after completion of healing of extraction socket approximately at 3 month. During this period, social life of patient with edentulous face might be hampered. Here, immediate denture is right answer.

What is immediate denture?
As name suggest, an immediate denture is a denture, which is placed immediately after the teeth have been extracted on same visit. This denture is made before extraction of teeth, so the goal of the treatment is for you never to be without teeth.

Here, I will explain about Immediate Dentures. Before starting you should know about the treatment procedure of conventional denture, as I described in other section.

Advantages of Immediate denture

The most important advantage of immediate dentures is that you never to be without teeth.
Other advantages include:
The form, size and arrangement of your natural teeth can more closely be copied when your natural teeth present in your mouth.
When immediate dentures are inserted, they act as a bandage and help to reduce bleeding.
Immediate dentures protect the gums at the extraction sites from irritation which might result from the tongue and food.
Immediate dentures immediately establish your speech patterns more easily. You do not have to learn to speak without teeth and then re-learn once dentures are made.
With immediate dentures you can chew better than you could without teeth during the normal waiting period for conventional dentures.
If dentures do not replace the natural teeth within a short time, the cheek muscles tend to fall in, result deep wrinkles on face.
If you remain without teeth for longer time, you may develop bad oral habits that will interfere with your ability to learn how to use dentures properly.

Disadvantages of Immediate Denture
Immediate dentures have some limitations. Immediate dentures are not advisable in some people with poor general health or specific oral problems.
There are more chances of denture soreness for few weeks after insertion of immediate denture, because of incomplete healing of tissue.
The construction of immediate denture require more dental visit during initial weeks, to check for changes in the gums. The original fitting and occlusion of the denture will be lost as tissue healing progress. This is natural.
As gums tissue healing progress after teeth extraction, immediate dentures usually become loose and need to be re-fitted within 3 – 6 months. In some cases new dentures must be made.
In those cases where remaining last back teeth removed, immediate denture will not always fit accurately as compare to conventional denture.
As compare to procedure of conventional denture, dummy or trial of denture is not possible with immediate denture because of presence of natural teeth.
Immediate dentures are usually more expensive because of the additional time, visits and skill required for their construction.

So in short, unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed. As a result, the patient does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. However, bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the healing period following toothremoval. Therefore a disadvantage of immediate dentures compared with conventional dentures is that they require more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process and generally should only be considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made.
