Post-operative instructions after wisdom tooth removal



  • The rolled gauze pack should be kept at site of wisdom tooth removed for one hour after removal.
  • So that the bleeding stops.
  • Don’t rinse or spit after removal of wisdom tooth extraction for next 24 hours to stop bleeding. Swallow saliva.
  • After wisdom tooth extraction, avoid eating anything until the anesthesia wears off (about two to two and a half hours). You can take soft or liquid diet after 2 hour of surgery like (dal rice, khichadi, plain ice-cream, banana).  Start eating semisoft foods when you can tolerate them.
  • Avoid hot or hard food for 24 hours.
  • Don't brush your teeth, rinse your mouth, spit or use mouthwash during the first 24 hours after surgery. You can resume brushing your teeth after the first 24 hours. Be gentle particularly near the surgical wound when brushing and gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water every two hours and after meals for a week.
  • You may be feeling some pain or discomfort, for those medicines will be prescribed to manage pain after procedure.
  • You may be feeling some Swelling. Use an ice pack over face for first day only. Any swelling of your cheeks usually improves in two or three days.
  • After surgery, plan to avoid too much speaking for the remainder of the day. Try to avoid speaking too much. Resume normal activities the next day.
  • Don’t use tobacco product or alcohol after extraction of tooth. Using tobacco products after oral surgery can delay healing and increase the risk of complications.
  • Do not use a straw to drink liquids for two days. Avoid drinking carbonated cold drinks.
  • Don’t worry if there is oozing of blood or blood-tinged saliva for first 24 hours, it’s normal. If there is profuse bleeding contact dental clinic.
  • You may have stitches that need to be removed on7th day from procedure.
