What Should I Do If My Dental Bridge Becomes Loose?

If your dental bridge becomes loose, contact your dentist as soon as possible rather than continuing to use it normally.

A loose bridge can occur for different reasons, including:
  • Failure or breakdown of the cement.
  • Decay affecting a supporting tooth.
  • Fracture of a supporting tooth.
  • Gum or periodontal problems.
  • Excessive biting forces or bruxism.
  • Damage or fracture of the bridge.
  • Changes in the supporting teeth.

Until you are examined, avoid chewing hard or sticky foods on the affected side and do not attempt to permanently glue the bridge back yourself.

Your dentist will determine whether the bridge can be re-cemented, repaired, or needs to be replaced, and will also check the health of the supporting teeth and gums.

Prompt evaluation can sometimes prevent a relatively simple problem from becoming more complicated.
