Is scaling enough to treat pyorrhea?

Scaling may be sufficient for early gum disease, but not necessarily for established periodontitis.

If disease is limited to gingivitis, professional cleaning and improved oral hygiene may be appropriate.

If periodontal pockets and supporting tissue destruction are present, more extensive periodontal treatment may be required. Scaling and root planing, commonly called deep cleaning, is one nonsurgical treatment used for periodontitis.
