Does Bridge Need Any Special Care?

A dental bridge does not require complicated maintenance, but good oral hygiene is essential to protect the bridge, supporting teeth, and surrounding gums.

Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth should remain part of your routine. Because a bridge occupies the space of a missing tooth, normal flossing may not be sufficient to clean underneath the artificial tooth.

Depending on the bridge design, your dentist may recommend:
  • Floss threaders to clean underneath the bridge.
  • Super floss for cleaning around bridge components.
  • Interdental brushes where appropriate.
  • Regular professional dental cleaning.
  • Periodic examination of the bridge and supporting teeth.

It is also advisable to avoid using the bridge to bite extremely hard objects or foods that could damage the restoration.

Regular dental check-ups are important because the health of the supporting teeth and gums plays a major role in the long-term success of a dental bridge.
